3aims Manifesto
3aims Ltd is a software company which strives to progress humanity by solving important problems using web technologies.
Our three aims are to:
- Produce elegant ways of building web applications
- Use our expertise to help organisations solve important problems
- Build simple solutions to better solve every-day problems
Expertise takes many forms. We strive to bring people together to create the right mix of expertise for the problems we are solving.
We work to understand the full complexity of the problems we are addressing so that we can implement the correct sub-set of functionality which the solution demands.
We work hard to innovate but we have no desire to keep our innovations to ourselves. We belive in collaboration, not competition. We publish and document our innovations so that others can build on our work and contribute their own improvments to our solutions.
How Are We Doing?
3aims has been a limited company for three years. In that time we have achieved the following towards our first aim:
- Co-founding the Pylons web framework
- Having our book The Definitve Guide to Pylons published by Apress
There is still more to do though and in the next 12 months we aim to launch a beta version of our Good Ingredients server infrastructure tutorials and a new set of web libraries which build on the foundation laid by Pylons.
We have also achieved the following towards our second aim:
- The launch of a clinical research management system for the Institute of Child Health (a joint organisation between UCL and Great Ormond Street hospital to manage their multi-million pound yearly research budget
- The creation of a prototype of a national system for the National Institue for Health Research to process all multi-centre clinical research trials in the United Kingdom
Once again there is still more to do. We are working on an R&D finance system for a UK University, a carbon reduction platform for a UK based company and a project to help large organisations run more effectively through a better understanding of organisational structure and working practices.
Our third aim is where we will be focussing the most attention over the next 12 months. In the past we have:
- Developed the code behind the extremely popular book recommendation site What Should I Read Next?
- Created the Smoking Pack Years webiste to allow Nurses and medical professionals worldwide to quickly get an indication of the lifetime tobacco exposure of a patient
- Built an online system to allow small communities to manage bookings of their village halls, making it easier for people to make the most of the facilities available and reducing the administration impact on those who run the halls
In the next 12-24 months we hope to turn the village hall booking system into a product which can be used by all village halls in the country, to launch a social network to help scuba diving clubs plan trips and manage resources and to launch a location-based platform to allow mobile professionals to decide where to work on a particular day based on the presense of other individuals with whom they would like to collaborate.
